Latest news ? Tuesday 4 September?

0830: Talks are continuing in Bangkok today, where finance continues to be a key issue of debate as NGOs and developing countries both raise concerns that wrapping up the LCA could stall progress this vitaltopic.

Adopt a Negotiator, who are following the negotiations on the ground,?give you an update on where the talks currently stand and some of the issues moving forward.

A new coalition of countries ? the Like Minded Group ? have also been getting some attention over the last few days as they become a formal negotiating group.

One British MP has called for a fresh, independent study into the economics of climate changed. MP Peter Lilley criticised the report produced six-years ago by economist Sir Nicholas Stern ? which warned that costs of inaction would outweigh those of acting ? saying it ?was not fit for purpose.?

New research from scientists at the universities of York, Glasgow and Leeds have found that Earth?s biodiversity generally increases as temperatures rise over the long term, but that rapid global warming is expected to have the opposite effect.

Is iTriage and Others a Case for Health Care Software Regulation?

Posted on 04. Sep, 2012 by Byron Freney in Health, Wellness

Search by category for ?Health & Fitness? apps in Apple?s App Store, and you?ll find more than 8,000 hits. Most are variations on similar and unsurprising themes ??carb and calorie counters, exercise and weight loss routines, activity monitors, re-packaged, searchable medical information and a wide range of wellness aids.

iTriage?is currently number six in the list of Top Ten Free Health and Wellness Apps. iTriage helps you answer the questions:

  • ?What medical condition could I have?
  • ?Where should I go for treatment??

User reviews so far are favorable, and some even credit the app for saving their lives or the lives of loved ones.

Apps like these are drawing attention from the medical establishment and the FDA (e.g.,?this story on NPR), which has concluded that when these apps manage to turn our phones and tablets into medical devices, they should be subject to closer scrutiny and oversight. In a previous post I pointed out that many Americans are increasingly turning to the Web and mobile apps to ?self-diagnosis their symptoms, even before walking into a doctors office.

?It just seems a little scary right now to have software making decisions about moles,? says one dermatologist. There are apps out there that calculate how much blood thinner to give heart attack patients, and even interpret blood tests, x-rays, ultrasounds and CT scans.

Developers worry that regulation will stifle innovation, and that even the most innocuous, information-oriented wellness apps will be hampered or thwarted on their quest to market. Experience tells us the question is no longer ?whether? we?ll see health care software regulation, but ?how? and ?when.?

Experience also tells us that these more practical questions don?t really have answers.

Or maybe they have answers, but the answers will change on a case-by-case basis.

Debates will rage in political arenas for decades, and individual decisions will offer precedence for future issues. The trick for technology innovators in the health care space will be no different than it is for innovators in other less heavily regulated markets ??up your game!

The most relevant, reliable and ubiquitously useful technologies will find their way to market. They always do. An innovator?s energy is spent in pursuit of things that aren?t yet possible, a drive that generates more motivation than frustration. Regulation is just another hurdle to be cleared, and something that has the potential to make successful products even more successful.

New Zealand Companies focus on Travel Risk Management and ...

Business travel is a competitive advantage. With the ability to seek out new markets and establish new business relationships. However, it is the responsibility of the employer to ensure all employees are provided a safe work environment, including during business travel. All business travel should be considered a threat, until proven otherwise. These were just some of the issues addressed at the recent New Zealand Security Conference 2012 in Auckland.?

"There are 3 areas of investment during business travel, the cost of travel, the value of the person conducting the travel and the potential business value as a result of the travel" according to Tony Ridley, and international travel risk management and duty of care professional. "Unfortunately, few business adequately and accurately evaluate business travel in this way, resulting in significant losses or single sector cost containment habits" he concluded.?

The recent New Zealand Security Conference 2012 was attended by many of New Zealand's top companies and service providers. Topics ranged from the use of traditional CCTV equipment to innovations in brian sciences and optimised output for executives.?

Overall, the conference was well attended and very well received with plans for an even bigger international event in 2013 to support and develop the New Zealand security corporate and commercial markets.?

Tony Ridley, Director for Products and Services at MRD, a premium business consulting firm, noted "the area of travel risk management has been exclusively centred around security and high risk issues for some time.". "Only now are companies and travel management professionals starting to realise the broader issues that contribute to business travel productivity, efficiency and safety" he went on to explain. "Duty of Care has also be come a topical area of concern for many businesses but far too many do not actually understand the legal requirements and supporting legislation associated to Duty of Care before rushing out solutions or other placebo services" Tony determined.?

The session that?Tony Ridley lead, covered off on the legislation and required practices for companies to address when pursuing Duty of Care and travel risk management strategies. He also provided an overview of the business travel space. Covering areas such as legal requirements, buyers intent, service provider shortfalls, commercial opportunity, health and safety along with information products to serve business travel.?

6 Top Tips for Getting a Fast Promotion ?

Getting a well-deserved promotion is one of the best feelings imaginable in a company. It?s an achievement to be proud of, and it often comes with its own new territory and responsibility. With that said, many workers struggle with getting promoted at all, let alone quickly. The truth is that a promotion can be quite easy to obtain in most jobs with the right approach. Many employees will find themselves working based on their salary or wages without ever understanding that it is themselves they must be working on.

1. Build a Strong Network Within the Company

Humans are a notoriously social creature. Without leadership, teamwork and strong social bonds, most of the technology and infrastructure of our world would be nonexistent. It?s absolutely critical to take this mentality into the workplace.

First and foremost, it is important to understand who is running what. There is no CEO that does everything (though there?are?some CEOs that do nothing). The people in charge of different aspects of the company are often the most knowledgeable and skilled in their department. These are the people that an employee should be communicating and learning from regularly, without getting in their way or otherwise obstructing business. If these people are not knowledgeable or skilled, it means that there?s a much easier promotion to be earned by eclipsing their position, but that?ll require a bit more of a dog-eat-dog attitude.

Once that?s been settled, it?s important to know who the big producers are and?why?they?re big producers. What is it that makes them so special? Is it their attitude in the business or is it their total output? Why is their leader in a higher-paid position than them?

2. Ask for Help & Help Others!

With a better understanding of the key leaders and team members, the next step becomes much much easier. When a specific problem arises, a strong network will fuel the exchange of help throughout the company. Remember, the company cannot function to its maximum potential without teamwork, leadership and social bonds. When all of these are in place, it makes it much easier to openly communicate and grow rapidly.

Imagine two employees that both begin working on day one. Employee A goes out of their way to talk to everyone that they see, regardless of whether its awkward or uncomfortable. Employee B simply begins to practice their job. While employee A will begin to understand the nature of the company, employee B will simply become better at their job. Employee A will then have the benefit of knowing exactly who to turn to when they don?t know how to do something or have a suggestion that will make everyone?s life easier. Employee B will have to figure out problems as they arise, without a confident understanding of who is the best-suited teammate to help.

It is also pivotal to contribute something to the company. Something as simple as offering to get someone coffee or regularly asking other employees if they need other help can go a surprisingly long way in terms of social-bonding. Friendly coworkers are much more likely to recommend or agree with promotion opportunities.

3. Be Professional, Inside and Out
Stepping up the level of professionalism in the job is the next tip for getting a fast promotion. There are a few easy ways to do this:

?

  • Dress like a professional. This not only improves first impressions, but it also brings the added benefit of looking great at work. A great guideline is to dress nice enough to stand out, but proper enough to fit in.

?

  • Act like a professional. If it isn?t important, don?t worry about it. If it?s important, make time for it. If there?s an opportunity to shine, take it without hesitation.

?

  • Invest in leadership qualities. Any decision that improves leadership skills is a powerful investment of time.

?

  • Stay humble. Every day is an opportunity to learn and produce as much as the day before it.

?

4. Bring Value to the Table

Bringing value is all about contribution. Contribute any simple ideas or insights that may help the company and never be afraid to be the fool. It is sad to see able-minded individuals repress their own intelligence out of fear that it won?t be good enough or that it will sound dumb. If it sounds good, say it. If it was wrong, learn quickly and move on without getting emotionally attached to the idea. Remember to respect the knowledge and skills of the other workers that have put in time and diligence towards their job, but also remember that a promotion is a reflection of excellence.

5. Exceed Expectations

The most positive feature that an employee can have is being an over-producer. An over-producer puts a huge amount of value into the company and allows employment, management and training to be much more flexible. When finances are tight in a sales position, an over-producer is often the backbone of the team and the most relied on individual. When productivity is down in an office, an over-producer is what makes tomorrow possible.

In regards to a promotion, being an over-producer is the easiest way to get promoted to a training manager. Smart leaders know that over-producers are more likely to teach others how to be over-producers.

6. Self-Investment is the Best Investment

Self-investment is a delicate art. To be able to stand in front of a mirror and choose a flaw to destroy or a strength to supplement takes a person of character. To spend time reading a checklist of things to do to get a quick promotion instead of watching T.V. and getting drunk is a sign of someone that is already on their way to advancing.

Below are a list of final tips that?ll help speed up the process. Thanks for reading!

?

  • Read books with the intention of understanding them. Make sure that they?re in some way related to your field, though.

?

  • Search for videos about leadership, strategy, profit, sales, teamwork and efficiency.

?

  • Commit to self-improvement and track your progress. Write down what skill level you are at today and monitor it for 7 days in a row. Could you have grown faster? Did you grow at all?

?

  • Remember that not everything is in your control. You didn?t decide which hospital to be born in, and you can?t decide whether or not Mary will be out sick on Tuesday with the Flu virus. Never take these circumstances to heart.

(AP Photo/John Raoux, File)

(AP) ? Maurice Jones-Drew remains as passionate as ever about his value.

So when the Jacksonville Jaguars running back ended his 38-day holdout Sunday ? without a new contract ? he had no apologies, no regrets and no concerns about his standing with the franchise.

"I'm in a good place," he said. "I did something I felt was right, and I'm always going to feel right. I'm not going to feel wrong for what I did it at all. And that's why I can come back and not have a negative attitude. I think if you regret things, you're going to come back salty, be a distraction, things like that.

"I don't feel that way 'cause what I did was right. No one can tell me it was wrong. Not one person here can tell me what I did was wrong."

Jones-Drew arrived at the team facility Sunday morning, chatted with teammates and then had a 40-minute conversation with coach Mike Mularkey.

Later, he spent nearly half an hour answering questions about his holdout, even getting to a point where he told reporters to "make sure we all get this out of the way because I'm done after this."

"This is the last talk about the whole contract situation," he said. "We're going to more forward to football after this."

Jones-Drew considered skipping games, missing paychecks and causing an even bigger distraction for the team. Ultimately, though, he opted to report a week before the season opener. Jacksonville plays at Minnesota next Sunday.

"It really wasn't about budging," said Jones-Drew, who took a conditioning test later in the day. "For me, it got to the point where I wasn't going to be traded. Obviously, they weren't going to pay me. I could have easily sat out until Week 10, come back and been a distraction. It wasn't about that. I'm not going to come back and distract guys from playing the game the right way."

The NFL's leading rusher in 2011, Jones-Drew skipped the team's entire offseason schedule in what became a nasty contract dispute.

Mularkey can fine MJD up to $30,000 a day ? plus $60,000 for a three-day, mandatory minicamp in June ? meaning the total tab could end up being $1.2 million. Jones-Drew declined to reveal what he and Mularkey discussed regarding the potential fine.

Jones-Drew is scheduled to make $4.45 million in 2012 and $4.95 million next year.

He wanted to renegotiate the final two years of a five-year, $31 million deal that paid him nearly $22 million the last three seasons. Owner Shad Khan and general manager Gene Smith refused, not wanting to set a precedent of paying players in the middle of lucrative deals.

Things got tense after Khan said publicly that Jones-Drew's absence "doesn't even move the needle." Khan also said his message to Jones-Drew is the "train's leaving the station. Run, get on it."

Those comments didn't sit well with Jones-Drew, who would have accepted a trade if it meant getting a new deal.

"I was disappointed about the comments," Jones-Drew said. "I expect you guys or people outside the organization to make those comments like that. But when you do get it inside the organization, with how hard we work, with the time you put in through the offseason, the time you spend away from your family here at the facility, you expect a little more appreciation."

Khan welcomed Jones-Drew aboard Sunday.

"The Jaguars are a better football team today than we were yesterday, and now our entire franchise can move forward together and as one," Khan said in a statement. "Nothing more needs to be said. "

Coming off a career year, Jones-Drew wanted to be one of the NFL's highest-paid backs. His average salary per year ranks behind Minnesota's Adrian Peterson, Tennessee's Chris Johnson, Philadelphia's LeSean McCoy, Houston's Arian Foster, St. Louis' Steven Jackson, Carolina's DeAngelo Williams and Seattle's Marshawn Lynch.

The 27-year-old Jones-Drew signed his deal in 2009, before rushing for at least 1,300 yards in three consecutive seasons. He had a league-best 1,606 yards on the ground in 2011. Not only has he seemingly outperformed his contract, Jones-Drew is the face of the franchise and probably the only player on the roster known outside small-market Jacksonville.

"My production spoke for itself," he said. "At the end of the day, that's how it played out. I read some articles that said there's no way you can outperform a contract. That's a lie."

The Jaguars, though, felt like they paid him based on the expectation that he would flourish as a starter after spending the first three years of his career splitting carries with Fred Taylor. The team doesn't want to pay a running back into his 30s, especially one who takes as many pounding hits as Jones-Drew does. Plus, the Jaguars have missed the playoffs in each of his three seasons as the starter.

"I knew it was going to be a difficult situation," Jones-Drew said. "I had two years left. But the way I was raised, the way I grew up, is if you believe something you fight for it. You fight for whatever you believe. My production stated something. I fought for it, plain and simple.

"Yes, it went into a holdout and all these different things. At the end of the day, that's what it was about: my production and my value. I haven't stopped fighting. I'm going to come out and play."

But will playing get Jones-Drew a new contract? Or will MJD and the Jaguars be in a similar position next year?

"We're over it," he said. "It's solved for the time being and we're ready to move on."
