In the early 1970s, a shaded, Mexican-American singer-songwriter from Detroit, Michigan named Rodriguez recorded two albums. Their fate, despite some decent reviews, were the same of thousands of records recorded each year: obscurity. Rodriguez continued to perform, and then he disappeared, another failed musician fading back into the landscape. End of story ? if you could even call it that.

South African filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul?s documentary film, Searching for Sugar Man, takes up Rodriguez?s story nearly thirty years later. In perhaps the single strangest twist of fate in the history of popular music, Rodriguez?s music and career does indeed have a story to tell, only it is one the singer-songwriter never knew. At some point in the 1970s, while South Africa suffered under the tyranny of apartheid, Rodriguez?s albums, Cold Fact (1970) and Coming from Reality (1971) made their way into the African country. The music struck a chord among white, middle-class South Africans who heard in Rodriguez?s cut-and-dry political lyrics and chilly, stark honesty, anthems of resistance. The records were shared, bootlegs were circulated, the albums were censored by state radio, and Rodriguez became a South African legend, selling hundreds of thousands of records. But the musician had no idea about any of it. Furthermore, in South Africa, no one had any idea who their musical hero really was.

There is a nostalgic subtext to Searching for Sugar Man, the kind of mystery born out of a time before the internet. I consider myself lucky to have grown up at a time when, without any spending money, the only way to get your hands on a new song was to sit by the radio with a cassette in the slot ready to hit record as soon as it was played. Before iTunes and YouTube, Spotify and Groveshark (before, dare we say, Napster) there was a preciousness to music that is now nearly completely lost. The younger generation doesn?t know how it feels to find a Jimi Hendrix track buried in a compilation album that snuck its way into your father?s record collection, or to have a friend slip a two-sided 90 minute cassette in your backpack at school, with side A bearing Metallica?s Master of Puppets, side B boasting Ride the Lightning. For a 12-year-old, slipping a nugget of pure gold in the zipper-lined pocket of the Jansport wouldn?t have been as exciting.

This is the world Searching for Sugar Man brings us back into, with Rodriguez?s music gaining mystique from the rarity and the mystery that surrounded it. Through the years, rumors began to circulate about what happened to the musician, including tales of a tragic and fatal end, Rodriguez lighting himself on stage after an audience rejects his unacknowledged brilliance. Taking cue from a magazine article that initially looked into the mystery behind Rodriguez, Malik Bendjelloul decides to try to track down the story. In the early days of the internet, in the late 1990s, clues begin to arise. But efforts to ?follow the money,? tracking the sales of Rodriguez?s music through the South African record labels back to America come up short. Someone has been profiting off Rodriguez?s unlikely success, but we can?t tell who. What do know is Rodriguez has been completely written out of the equation of success.

Here?s the trick, before you see Searching for Sugar Man (and it is one of those rare and unique documentaries with a story so odd and unlikely ? and well told ? that is not worth missing) don?t Google or wiki-search Rodriguez. What Bendjelloul does so well in his film is assume that obscurity of the artist persists to this day in some corners of the world (which it does, of course) and piece together a ten-year-old story that puts you right at its befuddling center. As Bendjelloul, along with South African music enthusiasts search for the story behind the man who wrote the songs that helped to define their lives, they discover something so simple and moving that to have any hint of its outcome would be to spoil some of the movie?s joy. The documentary is a joy, a celebration of a musical hero, the rediscovery of his powerful music, and the revelation of a man so honest, pure, and undeniable. What Bendjelloul leads us to is a profound kind of discovery, that when dealing with a personality like Rodriguez, his life lived amidst suffering and poverty, joy necessarily exists as a ?cold fact.?

Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spectrometer detects helium in moon's atmosphere

ScienceDaily (Aug. 15, 2012) ? Scientists using the Lyman Alpha Mapping Project (LAMP) spectrometer aboard NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) have made the first spectroscopic observations of the noble gas helium in the tenuous atmosphere surrounding the Moon.

These remote-sensing observations complement in situ measurements taken in 1972 by the Lunar Atmosphere Composition Experiment (LACE) deployed by Apollo 17.

Although designed to map the lunar surface, the LAMP team expanded its science investigation to examine the far ultraviolet emissions visible in the tenuous atmosphere above the lunar surface, detecting helium over a campaign spanning more than 50 orbits. Because helium also resides in the interplanetary background, several techniques were applied to remove signal contributions from the background helium and determine the amount of helium native to the Moon. Geophysical Research Letters published this research in 2012.

"The question now becomes, does the helium originate from inside the Moon, for example, due to radioactive decay in rocks, or from an exterior source, such as the solar wind?" says Dr. Alan Stern, LAMP principal investigator and associate vice president of the Space Science and Engineering Division at Southwest Research Institute, Boulder, Colo.

"If we find the solar wind is responsible, that will teach us a lot about how the same process works in other airless bodies," says Stern.

If spacecraft observations show no such correlation, radioactive decay or other internal lunar processes could be producing helium that diffuses from the interior or that is released during lunar quakes.

"With LAMP's global views as it moves across the Moon in future observations, we'll be in a great position to better determine the dominant source of the helium," says Stern.

Another point for future research involves helium abundances. The LACE measurements from the 1970's showed an increase in helium abundances as the night progressed. This could be explained by atmospheric cooling, which concentrates atoms at lower altitudes. LAMP will further build on those measurements by investigating how the abundances vary with latitude.

During its campaign, LACE also detected the noble gas argon on the lunar surface. Although significantly fainter to the spectrograph, LAMP also will seek argon and other gases during future observations.

"These ground-breaking measurements were enabled by our flexible operations of LRO as a Science Mission, so that we can now understand the Moon in ways that were not expected when LRO was launched in 2009," said Richard Vondrak, LRO Project Scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md.

BALTIMORE ? Things are coming apart at the seams for the Boston Red Sox.

It couldn?t be stated any more clearly as the baseball team limps to the finish line in its second straight underachieving season, and now the cracks are starting to show in the foundation. According to a Yahoo! Sports report by Jeff Passan, Dustin Pedroia and Adrian Gonzalez led a meeting between a large group of disgruntled players and Sox ownership in New York City.

The substance of the meeting: the players no longer wanted to play for manager Bobby Valentine and wanted him fired. The Sox were coming off losses in five of the last six games against the Blue Jays and the Rangers prior to the meeting with Sox ownership, and upset about a number of things. The team?s uninspired, losing performance was one of the big issues, but the Sox were also upset about Valentine leaving Jon Lester out to get abused for 11 runs during the previous homestand.

Several Sox sources confirmed the meeting and one said: ?It was pretty heated going into those meetings. The whole organization was there to discuss the current situation,? said the source. ?There was a lot talked about and things weren?t going well. Frankly, I was pretty surprised that nothing happened afterwards.?

Adrian Gonzalez was approached about the meeting and confirmed that it was an ?organization meeting? with coaches, players, management and ownership.

"It was an organizational assessment of everything, in general," said Gonzalez.

But when asked if he was actively trying to get Valentine fired, Gonzalez responded by saying ?I don?t know what you?re talking about.?

His general manager Ben Cherington confirmed the New York City meeting Sox ownership in the article.

He also went on to bash the source of the report.

?I?ve never seen that guy in our clubhouse before,? said Gonzalez, of Passan. ?He doesn?t know what?s going on with us.?

Dustin Pedroia didn?t want to talk about the report at all, and instead said he wanted to worry about playing against the Orioles on Tuesday night ? and essentially playing out the string.

?I just want to play baseball, man,? said Pedroia, who would neither confirm nor deny the Yahoo! Report.

Valentine himself admitted he did have a one-on-one meeting with Pedroia after an initial meeting with someone he wouldn?t identify, but couldn?t recall if it happened during the fateful month of July.

?I?m glad July is over because they?re still playing for me,? said Valentine with a smile on his face. ?I?m not going to comment on any story and I don?t know what issues you might be referring to. [What were] Adrian?s issues?

?Dustin and I had a talk about a meeting that I had. I don?t know if that was July or not.?

So there was plenty of scrambling, spin control and some Sox players that didn?t even have a clue what was going on prior to a muggy Tuesday night divisional game against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.

Many were looking at the next six games against the Orioles and Yankees as Boston?s last stand with a chance to push themselves into the playoff race if they could win the majority of those half-dozen ballgames. But the fractures in the Sox foundation are undeniable with more cracks coming to daylight each and every day, and an ownership group that has done nothing about for two years running aside from firing Terry Francona.

When underperforming, malcontent players are forming a mutiny on the manager and Sox ownership has suddenly turned deaf, dumb and blind after a wonderful initial run from 2002-2008, the end isn?t just near.

It seems that this Sox season was doomed before it even got started with the same group of players and the same apathy from the owner?s box.

It won?t get better until somebody starts radically altering the DNA of this team and finally admitting there are some epic problems that need to be properly addressed once the season is over.?

Orbital photo shows Mars rover and its trash

NASA's Mars Curiosity rover is in fine shape, but the sky crane that lowered the car-sized, 1-ton craft to the Red Planet's surface is not looking so good. That's plain to see from the "crime scene photo" provided by Curiosity's high-flying sister probe, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

The orbital image, released today, not only shows Curiosity and the sky crane, but the rover's parachute, backshell and heat shield as well. The picture was snapped on Monday night (Pacific Time), about 24 hours after the sky crane executed a perfect maneuver to lower Curiosity to its landing spot in Gale Crater, then flew away for a planned crash landing.

Sarah Milkovich, a member of the orbiter's science team, unveiled the latest jaw-dropping image during today's news briefing at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. The debris scattered around the rover documents each step of the Mars Science Laboratory's nail-biter of a landing sequence.

"It's like a crime scene photo here," she said.

The heat shield is visible toward the lower right corner of the scene, which is part of a larger strip of imagery acquired by the orbiter. NASA's schedule for Curiosity's landing called for that disk-shaped part of the spacecraft to be thrown off two and a half minutes before landing ? and in fact you can see the shield falling away in a video released Monday. Milkovich said it landed about three-quarters of a mile (1,200 meters) from the rover's landing site.

Curiosity's backshell and its attached parachute are spread out southwest of the rover, about four-tenths of a mile (615 meters) away. Those pieces were jettisoned from the spacecraft about a minute before landing. You can see them still attached to the rover in a different picture?taken by the orbiter during Curiosity's descent.

The sky crane was the last piece of the landing puzzle: It was a rocket-powered platform designed to reduce the descent velocity to a near-standstill, and then drop the rover to the ground on the end of three strong cables. When the rover hit the surface, the cables were cut with explosive charges, and the sky crane flew itself away to avoid crashing on top of the rover. Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's picture shows the dark streaks left behind by the crane's crash, about a half-mile (650 meters) to the northwest. The blast pattern suggests that the crane hit the dirt obliquely, Milkovich said.

Analyzing the crime scene
At each site where something landed, the relatively bright material on the surface has been disrupted, exposing darker material beneath, Milkovich said. The pattern of dark and light material around the rover supports the view that Curiosity is oriented along a northwest-to-southeast axis, with the rover's front facing the 3-mile-high (5-kilometer-high) mountain known as Aeolis Mons or Mount Sharp.

"You're getting the same information from orbit as you're getting from the ground, and that really makes you feel very good," Milkovich said.

Some observers noted that images taken just after the landing, by a rear-facing camera on Curiosity, seemed to show a puff of dust rising from a spot northwest of the rover ??and they hypothesized that the disturbance was caused by the sky crane's crash. Now the orbital imagery shows that the spot really is roughly where the wreckage is located. A reporter asked Mike Watkins, one of the mission managers for Curiosity's $2 billion mission, whether the hypothesis could actually be right.

"I don't think you can rule it out, based on this image," Watkins replied.

In order to get the shot, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter had to be rolled to an unusually high 41-degree angle, producing a sidelong view similar to what you'd see from an airplane window. The picture was taken from a height of roughly 186 miles (300 kilometers), yielding a resolution of 15 inches (39 centimeters) per pixel. ?Future pictures are expected to show the hardware in greater detail.

Kenneth Edgett, a member of the Curiosity team from Malin Space Science Systems, said the picture showed three different types of geological formations converging on a point near Curiosity's landing site. "If it were up to me, I would go where those three come together," Edgett said. Nature's Eric Hand provides more detail on Curiosity's potential future route. However, mission managers say it's too early to tell exactly which places the rover will visit.

There's one place the rover will definitely not visit: the sky crane crash scene. Engineers estimate that there were still about 300 pounds (140 kilograms) of hydrazine rocket fuel left over from the sky-crane platform's 880-pound (400-kilogram) supply when the crash occurred. Mission managers want to make sure the rover avoids having its scientific instruments contaminated by the fuel that was splashed around the impact zone.

Curiosity is getting busy
Watkins said the rover is in good shape. It's already taking lots of pictures and acquiring scientific data with its RAD experiment (which reads radiation levels) and its REMS weather station. Over the next day, mission managers will tweak the REMS settings to get it in better working order, and fine-tune the orientation of Curiosity's high-gain antenna to get it pointing more directly at Earth.

By Wednesday, Curiosity's mast should be raised to its full height of 7 feet (2.1 meters) above the ground, which will clear the way for the checkout of the mast's science and navigation cameras. The first high-resolution, 360-degree views of Curiosity's surroundings could become available in the next day or two.

Curiosity will be gathering data for at least the next two years, with the prime objectives of unraveling billions of years' worth of the geological record at Mount Sharp and looking for chemical evidence that could show whether or not Mars was ever potentially habitable. There'll be lots of cool pictures ahead, but Watkins said the early pictures are particularly treasured because they show places that have never been seen up close before.

"These are the days that people have worked five or 10 years for, going on right now," he said.

SANDY, Utah (AP) - Landon Donovan scored a goal in each half to fuel a rally from a two-goal deficit and lift the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 3-2 victory over Real Salt Lake 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Mike Magee also scored for the Galaxy, who had three unanswered goals to knock off the Western Conference leaders.

Kyle Beckerman and Alvaro Saborio each scored first-half goals for RSL, which saw its seven-game unbeaten streak snapped in stunning fashion. It was the first time in franchise history Salt Lake lost an MLS game after building a two-goal lead.

Salt Lake (10-4-2) attacked the Galaxy early and it paid off. The hosts put Los Angeles on its heels defensively and the Galaxy (5-8-2) struggled to find methods for containing RSL's main playmakers.

Houston (5-4-5, 20 points) tied the game in the 90th minute on Bruin's header from the left side of the goalkeeper's box off a cross from Geoff Cameron.

Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens caught the foot of Alan Gordon, earning Wondolowski the penalty kick. It was the 12th goal of the season and the fifth game-winning goal for Wondolowski.

Steven Lenhart had his shot from inside the penalty area stopped by Pickens before Gordon, situated in front of the goal, saw the ball come directly to him. His shot went in off defender Hunter Freeman for the own goal.

San Jose (9-3-3) peppered Pickens with quality chances all night.

Brian Mullan scored on a header in the 18th minute for Colorado (6-8-1) even though the Earthquakes controlled play for the first 17 minutes, when they had three quality chances against Pickens.

CARSON, Calif. (AP) - Juan Pablo Angel scored in the 82nd minute to give Chivas USA their second win at home this season.

Seeking to put the Impact off-balance from the start, Chivas opened the scoring in the 15th minute. A shot by Juan Agudelo deflected off the thigh of Moreno and past goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.

After the Chivas goal, Montreal began to pressure the Rojiblancos and found the equalizer in the 42nd minute. Davy Arnaud's cross created space for Brazilian midfielder Felipe, who beat a diving goalkeeper Dan Kennedy from close range.

Just five minutes after the pair came on as substitutes, Jorge Villafana fired a cross from the left side of midfield to Angel, who headed his third goal of the season past Ricketts to give Chivas three points.

Whitecaps 1, Red Bulls 1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Heath Pearce scored in the 85th minute as the Red Bulls salvaged a tie. Pearce sprinted through a crowd to head Joel Lindpere's cross past goalkeeper Joe Cannon.

Martin Bonjour's goal in the 75th minute gave the Whitecaps a late lead. The ball was crossed by Davide Chiumiento from the right wing and after a friendly touch by Alain Rochat it found its way to Bonjour at the top of the box.

After a brief hesitation he belted a right-footed shot into the top right portion of the net.

Cannon made five saves for Vancouver (7-3-5), which remains unbeaten in five games (2-0-3).

New York (8-4-3) goalie Ryan Meara failed to stop the only shot on target by Vancouver.
