Potential voter registration fraud in Florida: GOP?s own 'ACORN' scandal?

Saying the party has ?zero tolerance? for voter fraud, the GOP also filed complaints against the company with the Florida Secretary of State?s office. The company, run by long-time GOP operative Nathan Sproul, says a single employee was responsible for the forged signatures, though the problem, by Friday, had spread to 10 counties.

"This is an issue we take extremely seriously," RNC spokesman Sean Spicer told CBS News. "When allegations were brought to our attention we severed all ties to the firm."

While reasonable, those explanations could have trouble finding traction among the US electorate, which has watched battles erupt in mostly swing states from Florida to Ohio over control of voter rolls, and heated debates about potential disenfranchisement of key Democratic constituencies, poorer, minority, and elderly voters.

Why do Election 2012 swing states matter? 5 resources to explain.

The allegations are particularly poignant in Florida, which decided the presidential race in 2000 after a massive recount was halted by the US Supreme Court in a way that gave the election to the GOP, and where the current Republican state administration has fought with the US Department of Justice over an effort to weed out illegal immigrants from the state?s voter rolls.

Even more to the point of third-party voter registration contractors, the League of Women Voters sued Florida earlier this month after it instituted a new 48-hour deadline for turning in registration forms. The state relented, reinstating a 10-day deadline.

What?s more, the fraudulent registration findings have echoes of the 2008 controversies over the now-disbanded ACORN community activism group, which was accused by Republicans in 2008 of falsifying forms.

Brad Friedman, who runs the electoral watchdog Brad Blog, helped break the story, tying it to other emerging GOP registration controversies in California and Colorado. Other states where Sproul?s firm had been hired to gather registrations have not reported any problems.

?A massive GOP voter registration scheme, which appears to involve the upper-echelons of the national party, [has begun] to emerge,? Mr. Friedman writes.

Teens to stage concert | Toowoomba Music | Music Reviews ...

TOOWOOMBA teen Jenyu Shaw is shaking up the belief that all teenagers are game-playing couch potatoes.

The 16-year-old Concordia Lutheran College student is organising the Toowoomba Youth Charity Concert.

It is the second time he has staged the youth-focused event.

"Last year I was practising for my exam and thought it would be good to be able to play for an audience," Jenyu said.

"There were other musicians in the same boat and I also thought we could raise some money."

The inaugural concert raised more than $1600 for the group, Jubilee Ministries, to help fund programs for the disadvantaged.

This year, World Vision will benefit from the concert.

"People definitely think that teenagers just sleep and play games," he said.

"But I know a lot of people my age who have done heaps."

Jenyu's instruments of choice are the piano and the trombone.

He, along with six other performers, will present a 10-minute piece for the concert.

"There are different people performing this year," he said.

"We have people from different schools and groups.

"The whole concert has been organised by teenage kids, and on the day, the ushers and crew are all going to be teenagers from Toowoomba.

"I have been around to many of the eisteddfods and invited some of the best youth musicians from Toowoomba to play."

Liver cells, insulin-producing cells, thymus can be grown in lymph nodes

Friday, September 28, 2012

Lymph nodes can provide a suitable home for a variety of cells and tissues from other organs, suggesting that a cell-based alternative to whole organ transplantation might one day be feasible, according to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and its McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. In a report recently published online in Nature Biotechnology, the research team showed for the first time that liver cells, thymus tissue and insulin-producing pancreatic islet cells, in an animal model, can thrive in lymph nodes despite being displaced from their natural sites.

Hepatitis virus infection, alcoholic cirrhosis and other diseases can cause so much damage that liver transplantation is the only way to save the patient, noted senior investigator Eric Lagasse, Pharm. D., Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Pathology, Pitt School of Medicine. Children with DiGeorge syndrome lack functional thymus glands to produce essential immune cells, and diabetes can be cured with a pancreas transplant.

"However, the scarcity of donor organs means many people will not survive the wait for transplantation," said Dr. Lagasse, whose lab is at the McGowan Institute. "Cell therapies are being explored, but introducing cells into tissue already ravaged by disease decreases the likelihood of successful engraftment and restoration of function."

In the study, his team tested the possibility of using lymph nodes, which are abundant throughout the body and have a rich blood supply, as a new home for cells from other organs in what is called an "ectopic" transplant.

They injected healthy liver cells from a genetically-identical donor animal into lymph nodes of mice at various locations. The result was an enlarged, liver-like node that functioned akin to the liver; in fact, a single hepatized lymph node rescued mice that were in danger of dying from a lethal metabolic liver disease. Likewise, thymus tissue transplanted into the lymph node of mice that lacked the organ generated functional immune systems, and pancreatic islet cell transplants restored normal blood sugar control in diabetic animals.

"Our goal is not necessarily to replace the entire liver, for example, but to provide sufficient cell mass to stabilize liver function and sustain the patient's life," Dr. Lagasse said. "That could buy time until a donor organ can be transplanted. Perhaps, in some cases, ectopic cell transplantation in the lymph node might allow the diseased organ to recover."

Improving Your Internet Business ? The Best Way to | Travel

Just about the biggest hurdle that today?s Internet Marketers face is time management so that they can get as much done in less time. Especially when you are just getting started, there is so much to do and lots of different tasks to accomplish; it can all get so confusing and even a little bit frustrating too. This is precisely why you need to focus on reducing the things that are going to distract you and better organizing your tasks so that you won?t have to put so many hours into a task that can be accomplished in far less time.

Heard of the famous phrase ?keep it simple stupid?? The phrase is famous for real reasons and it applies to your work as well. When you?re dealing with a specific task, try to find methods for keeping it super simple instead of spending a lot of time making it complex. There are often times when, in our quest to keep things simple, we make them more complicated; work hard not to do this. Try to get an overview of the task from a broader perspective; separate it into three sections and then work on them in sequence. Making something hard is pretty senseless especially when there are easier routes to get there. Work against your kitchen timer; this method can double your speed and raise your productivity too. This particular technique can help you achieve quite a lot because as you work against the time you have left you?ll be pushed to work faster and you will get more done in less time. To use one example, if it typically takes you around twenty minutes or so to finish a 500 word article set the timer for half that time and try to write the same article in that time period. However, make sure your quality isn?t affected in the quest to get more work done.

?Touch any task at hand just once? is a rule that most Internet Marketers fail to master; it means that when you look at a task that needs to be completed, get to work on it. Going through it a bunch of times without any real course of action isn?t going to get you anywhere. For example, when you go through your inbox, decide right there and then what to do with your email: reply, delete or archive and take care of it while you can; don?t just let it sit around taking up room in your brain. All of the tips we?ve talked about in this article are easy to apply and can really change the way you see online business. After all, being able to grow your web business is dependent upon how well you actually manage your time and the tasks you do so you can get the most from them. The only thing that you really need to remember is that it is really important to make sure that you are open to experimenting with new methods for improving your productivity on a regular basis so that you can make sure that you are always increasing the return you will get on the investment of your time. High Associates Blog For commercial real estate, the Northeast ...

Published by High Associates. on September 26th, 2012

According to the Society of Industrial and Office REALTORS?? (SIOR) most recent Commercial Real Estate Index (for Q2 2012), which looks at information gathered from its members and measures ten variables related to the U.S. industrial and office markets, there are mixed results across the country. But the continued slow economy definitely ?has spilled over into industrial and office markets.??

This is certainly true in the Northeast, which has some of the lowest levels of leasing activity according to the index.?

?Both asking rents and vacancy rates are closing in on historical averages, with vacancy rates lower than they were a year ago. Development activity remains low and sublease space is declining,? reported the SIOR.

These current statistics bring to mind two of my most important pieces of real estate advice:

One:? You make money when you buy, and this is a good time to buy

Down times such as these are a great time to analyze and seize the right buying opportunities. Most investors understand that economic cycles occur and a business downturn only lasts so long, and then values increase once more.

Fully appreciate that you make your money when you buy, and buying when the market is down makes you even more money.

It?s important to evaluate a property correctly to determine what the potential is if you?re redeveloping or repositioning it in the market. It?s also important to reflect carefully on how you can enhance a property in a way that perhaps others can?t envision.

Consider the future income stream you can realize through the process from renovations and repairs through to lease up. Everything is about the future income of that building as well as the future value when you sell it.? The same is also true for a vacant parcel of land, with regard to determining a higher and better use for the property at acceptable financial returns.

Two: Leasing may be an attractive option

In bad economic times, leasing is an attractive option for a number of reasons.? Since it?s more difficult to gain access to capital, in dealing with banks you might be able to acquire only a certain amount of funding, and you won?t want to sink that capital completely into purchasing. Leasing is virtually 100 percent financing, freeing working capital for other business uses.

During such times, you most likely will be able to increase the value of your investment more through expanding your business than with any potential increase in property value.? If you lease, your entire rental payment is tax deductible, whereas if you buy real estate, you cannot depreciate the land, only the improvements on your land.

If you lease an existing building, it is almost always immediately available. Additionally, you avoid much of the development process and its related issues of zoning, permits, codes, fees, etc.

So, as with every challenging set of circumstances, there is always the silver lining if you look for it. Right now, that silver lining could be to purchase or lease a new property.

Peter Weller Talks Star Trek Into Darkness

robocop peter weller Peter Weller Talks Robocop Reboot And Working With J.J. Abrams

Actor Peter Weller?really is just a stand up guy. While the rest of us complain about how the Robocop?reboot looks pretty damn stupid, Weller instead wishes the film well.

Speaking with I Am Rogue (via Comic Book Movie), Weller said that the franchise is not a part of his life anymore, but he hopes they make a good movie.?He also admits that actor Joel Kinnaman, who takes on the titular role that Weller originated, is going to ?have to pull up his boots.?

Indeed.

Weller was far more excited though to discuss his as-of-yet-unnamed role in the Star Trek sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness. While he cannot reveal what his character or his role is in the new film, he had nothing but praise for director J.J. Abrams:

?[Abrams is] the best, one of the greatest human beings ever [and] one of the most talented people I have ever worked with.?

High praise indeed from a man who has worked with David Cronenberg and Paul Verhoeven.

We will know soon enough what Peter Weller has in store for us with?Star Trek Into Darkness?as the film hits theatres May 17, 2013.

As for the Robocop reboot??Early buzz on the film isn?t too hot but on August 9th, 2013 we?ll finally get a chance to see how it turned out.

'Like a puppy mill': 39 emaciated horses rescued

By NBC News staff and wire reports

SEATTLE -- Animal control officers seized 39 emaciated and sickly horses from inhumane conditions in dark stalls filled with feces on a breeding farm outside of Tacoma on Wednesday, authorities said.

U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents discovered the malnourished animals, many injured and some standing in more than a foot of waste, while serving drug-related warrants on Tuesday at the 99-acre property in Graham, Washington, Pierce County Animal Control supervisor Brian Boman told Reuters.

Animal control officers and sheriff's deputies from Pierce and Kitsap counties returned to the ranch a day later to seize the animals and found many were highly skittish because they had been "stall-bound" in three dark barns, Boman said.

"It was like a puppy mill, only with horses," Boman told Reuters. "The conditions are terrible. There's no telling how long it's been since they've seen daylight."

Read the story on NBC's KING5.com

Pierce County auditor Julie Anderson told NBC station KING 5 that the horses had not been handled in a very long time. "They literally have their 'night eyes' on so they're very sun sensitive and are having trouble with depth perception," she said, describing?the scene as "wanton criminal neglect."

The horses were receiving veterinary care and were being held for the time being as evidence, KING 5 reported.

No-one has been arrested so far but the owners could face charges of animal cruelty in the second degree, a gross misdemeanor in the state of Washington.

KING 5 reported that an attorney for the owner said his client "loves these animals" and did not believe the conditions reached a criminal level.

'No lighting or ventilation'
Authorities spent more than nine hours rounding up the horses, which included mostly purebred Arabians as well as Belgian Draft horses and Clydesdales, to take them to nearby fairgrounds. None were race horses.

Some likely would be euthanized, Boman said.

A Pierce County Sheriff's Office news release, describing the roundup as the largest horse seizure the county had ever undertaken, cited the horses' living conditions as deplorable.

"Most of the horses were in barns that had large amounts of urine and feces in the stalls," the release said. "Some of the barns had no lighting or ventilation and the smell of ammonia was very strong."

Because federal and county criminal investigations are ongoing, federal authorities would not immediately release the name of the farm's owner, said Emily Langlie, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Seattle.

NBC News staff and Reuters contributed to this report.

Libya leader to NBC: Film not behind consulate attack

In an NBC News exclusive, Libya's President Mohammed Magarief tells NBC's Ann Curry that no mastermind has been arrested in the attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi but that he believes it was a pre-planned act of terrorism involving elements of al-Qaida.

?

By NBC News staff

Updated at 6:37 p.m. ET: An anti-Islam film that sparked violent protests in many countries had?"nothing to do with" a?deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi earlier this month, Libya's president told NBC News.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News'?Ann Curry, President Mohamed Magarief discounted claims that the attack was in response to a movie produced in California and available on YouTube. He noted that the assault happened on Sept. 11 and that the video had been available for months before that.

"Reaction should have been, if it was genuine, should have been six months earlier. So it was postponed until the 11th of September," he said. "They chose this date, 11th of September to carry a certain message."

NYT: Deadly Libya attack a major blow to CIA efforts

Magarief said there were no protesters at the site before the attack, which he noted came in two assaults, first with rocket-propelled grenades on the consulate, then with mortars at a safe house.

Khaled Abdullah / Reuters

Protests ignited by a controversial film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad spread throughout Muslim world.

The attack took the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens, as well as information management officer Sean Smith and security personnel Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty.

US Ambassador Chris Stevens was 'courageous,' Obama says

Magarief told Curry that based on the accuracy of the assault, he believes the attackers must have had training and experience using the weapons.

"It's a pre-planned act of terrorism," he said, adding that the anti-Islam film had "nothing to do with this attack."

Though Magarief believes the attack was the work of Islamist fundamentalists, he dismisses any notion that Libya is in danger of becoming a theocracy.

?This will never happen,? he said. ? They don?t have the strength. They don?t have the supporters. They will remain a minority that?s isolated, that will not be accepted by us. And I?m sure Libyans will fight to the last man against seeing this happen in our land.?

'A strong friend'
Magarief said that while Libyans appeared to be behind the attack that "these Libyans do not represent the Libyan people or Libyan population in any sense of the word."

Hilary Stevens, sister of Christopher Stevens, the U.S. Ambassador to Libya who died Tuesday during an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. In an interview with Rock Center Anchor Brian Williams, Stevens reflects on her brother's legacy and work.

He added: "We consider the United States as a friend, not only a friend, a strong friend, who stood with us in our moment of need."

More than 40 people have been questioned in connection with the incident,?the Libyan leader?told Curry.

He described Stevens as a "humble and very unique human being" and a "great friend of Libya."

Thousands of Libyans stormed the headquarters of an Islamist militia group in Benghazi Friday night in a deadly exchange. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

Backlash: Protesting Libyans storm militant compound

The Obama administration initially maintained that the attacks were directly linked to protests over the film. Speaking on NBC?s ?Meet the Press? on Sept. 16, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said: ?What happened in Benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hours before in Cairo, almost a copycat of the demonstrations against our facility in Cairo, prompted by the video.?

However, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney last week said it was "self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack."

Slain ambassador's mom: 'He was trying to do something much bigger'

Speaking before the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, President Barack Obama said: ?There are no words that excuse the killing of innocent? people.

On Tuesday, President Obama spoke to the United Nations general assembly in an emotional speech about the recent violence against Americans. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney led a chorus of Republican criticism of the administration's foreign policy on Monday, accusing President Barack Obama of minimizing the recent killing of the U.S. ambassador to Libya as a mere "bump in the road" rather than part of a chain of events that threatens American interests.

White House press secretary Jay Carney called the accusations "desperate and offensive," an attempt by Romney and his allies to gain political advantage in the latter stages of a political campaign that seems to be trending Obama's way.

The president did not comment on the criticism when he and first lady Michele Obama taped an appearance on ABC's "The View" that blended the personal with the political. Asked if a Romney presidency would be a disaster, Obama said the nation can "survive a lot." He added: "The American people don't want to just survive, we want to thrive."

The back and forth on foreign policy occurred as Romney said he was shifting to a more energetic schedule of public campaign events, bidding to reverse recent erosion in battleground state polls. After days spent largely raising campaign cash ? and trying to minimize the fallout from one speech to donors last spring ? he pledged to make the case for "real and positive change."

While national polls make the race exceedingly close, Obama has gained ground on Romney in many recent surveys when potential voters are asked to compare the two rivals in their ability to fix the economy. Sluggish growth and national unemployment of 8.1 percent make the economy by far the dominant issue in the race, and the two men have focused much of their time and advertising budgets on highlighting their differences on taxes, spending and plans for job creation.

The same polls show Obama with a healthy lead over Romney when voters are asked which candidate is better equipped to handle foreign policy, and the president has not shied away from trumpeting his decision to order the secret mission by U.S. forces that killed terrorism mastermind Osama bin Laden in his Pakistani hideout more than a year ago.

At the same time, Romney's advisers say voters are more inclined to question Obama's handling of foreign policy after the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, earlier this month resulted in the death of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

Not only Romney, but other Republicans, as well, challenged Obama on foreign policy on Monday.

In a conference call with reporters, Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., the House majority leader, said, "Israel continues to find itself on the receiving end of harsh language by the president of the White House. ... There is a somewhat continued pattern of throwing Israel under the bus when Israel stands as our closest ally."

And the National Republican Senatorial Committee issued challenges to Democratic candidates in several races to "share their view" on Obama's remarks in an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes" over the weekend.

In the interview, Obama was responding when asked if recent events in the Middle East gave him pause for supporting governments that came to power following a wave of regime changes known as the Arab Spring.

He said he has long noted that events were going to be rocky, adding that the question itself "presumes that somehow we could have stopped this wave of change."

"I think it was absolutely the right thing for us to align ourselves with democracy, universal rights. ... But I was pretty certain and continue to be pretty certain that there are going to be bumps in the road because ? you know, in a lot of these places ? the one organizing principle has been Islam. ...

"There are strains of extremism, and anti-Americans, and anti-Western sentiments and you know can be tapped into by demagogues," he added.

Romney was eager to talk about the topic, squeezing interviews with three television networks into his schedule and touching on the subject at the beginning of a rally in Pueblo, Colo.

"I can't imagine saying something like the assassination of ambassadors is a bump in the road, when you look at the entire context, the assassination, the Muslim Brotherhood president being elected in Egypt, 20,000 people killed in Syria, Iran close to becoming a nuclear nation, that these are far from being bumps in the road," he told ABC.

"They represent events that are spinning out of the kind of influence we'd like to have. We're at the mercy of events rather than shaping the events in the Middle East."

U.S. officials are investigating the deaths in Libya, which occurred when the consulate was breached.

In his appearance on "The View," the president avoided a direct answer when asked if the attack had been terrorism.

"There's no doubt that the kind of weapons that were used, the ongoing assault, that it wasn't just a mob action. What's clear is that, around the world, there are still a lot of threats out there," he said.

Romney intends to return to the subject of international affairs and discuss foreign aid, trade agreements and international development when he addresses the Clinton Global Initiative in New York on Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the campaign's thinking.

Romney, like Cantor, took a slap Monday at Obama's handling of relations with Israel.

"The president doesn't have time to actually spend time with leaders of these nations, particularly Bibi Netanyahu, I find that very troubling," he said.

In a campaign setting records for television advertising, both campaigns released new commercials during the day. And Obama conceded some of his own had gone too far.

"You know, do we see sometimes us going overboard in our campaign, the mistakes that are made in areas where there is no doubt that somebody could dispute how we are presenting things ? that happens in politics," he said during the "60 Minutes" taping. The remark was not part of the broadcast but was posted to the CBS website.

(AP Photo/David Vincent, File)

(AP) ? Rafael Nadal still has no timetable for his return from a knee injury, and the 11-time Grand Slam champion isn't sure if he'll play the Australian Open in January.

"All that is in my mind is to keep working hard to come back," Nadal said in interviews with European newspapers Tuesday. "I cannot think about the future because it's not like if you break your arm and you know you will have a few weeks like this, then a few weeks like that and then you are back."

The Spaniard hasn't played since losing in the second round of Wimbledon in June to little-known Lukas Rosol. Nadal is recovering from a partially torn patella tendon in his left knee.

"This is a day-by-day thing," Nadal said. "I have checks every day to see how I'm improving. I can't predict what will happen."

Nadal could miss the ATP World Tour Finals in London Nov. 5-12 and Spain's Davis Cup final against the Czech Republic Nov. 16-18.

As for the Australian Open, he was quoted in the Daily Mail as saying: "I hope you see me in Australia. That is the biggest goal for me, to come back just before then in Qatar, but I cannot say for sure it is going to happen. The only thing is to recover well. I want to be 100 percent when I come back."

Nadal said he played with anti-inflammatories to get through the French Open, which he won for a record seventh time, and took pain-killing injections at Wimbledon.

He said he was particularly upset at missing the London Olympics, where he had been scheduled to carry the Spanish flag at the opening ceremony.

"I was very, very sad for three weeks around then," he said. "It only comes every four years. Missing the U.S. Open was hard, but you think you will have more chances."

Nadal praised Andy Murray, who won the U.S. Open for his first Grand Slam title after losing in four previous major finals.

"He deserves it more than anyone," Nadal said. "I am very happy for him."

California makes it easier to obtain birth control

By Eric W. Dolan
Sunday, September 23, 2012 13:34 EDT

?

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) on Saturday signed into law a bill that makes it easier for women to obtain hormonal contraceptives.

?At a time when some seek to turn back the clock and restrict women?s health choices, California is expanding access to birth control and reaffirming every woman?s basic Constitutional rights,? Brown said.

The new law allows registered nurses, nurse practitioners and nurse-midwives to dispense and administer hormonal contraceptives after performing an assessment. The law will increase access to birth control for thousands of women in California, according to California Women?s Law Center. Women will no longer have to make an appointment with a doctor to get birth control pills.

?Having AB 2348 signed into law is the culmination of our hard-fought effort to expand access to birth control for women who need it,? Democratic Assemblymember Holly Mitchell of Los Angeles, who introduced the legislation, said. ?Today, women who would not have otherwise had access to hormonal contraceptives can declare a victory.?

Absolute Rights Publishes Eightieth Edition of Popular Newsletter

The semiweekly Newsletter from Absolute Rights has been released, containing articles on pro-Muslim censorship, Afghanistan violence, and Presidential polls.

Austin, TX (PRWEB) September 20, 2012

Absolute Rights, the leading freedom protecting and civil rights informational publication, has published the eightieth edition of their semiweekly Newsletter. This milestone coincides with a current news story about the Middle Eastern violence in response to an anti-Islam movie, as well as an attack on a Coalition Forces military base in Afghanistan, and the most recent Presidential polls.

The main article was written by Tim Young, Absolute Rights? Managing Editor. Entitled ?Your First Amendment Rights Under Attack,? the Newsletter piece related the recent anti-Islam video to America?s Freedom of Speech issue. While the administration denounced the video, Young said that it may lead to further restrictions on what people can say and what they can?t.

?The problem with the limitations of free speech, and I have said this before on Absolute Rights, is that when you begin to take one piece of it away, you open yourself up to have more and more taken away until it?s practically illegal to say anything that you want to say,? Young wrote.

?Freedom of speech is why we have a lot of disgusting things in our society, but it?s also why we can stand up for ourselves and speak our minds against the government,? Young said in the article.

The Crisis Ops portion of the Newsletter covers the proper footwear to have in a survival situation. ?What you will want is a good pair of boots,? the article said. ?Something light weight and has a good all-terrain coating to them. You?ll want something that has a tough exterior and can keep you warm. You?ll also want something that has a tough exterior and can handle taking a few hits.?

Global Watch, the international affairs section, highlighted the recent attacks on an Afghanistan military base by Afghani insurgents dressed in American uniforms. ?The strategy of wearing US military uniforms is not unique to this attack,? said the article. ?Afghan insurgents had worn them before to attack coalition troops in May of 2010. This strategy was also used in Iraq in 2007.?

The final part of the Newsletter is the Contender?s Corner, where Young analyzes the latest polls on the Presidential race.

?If you?re like me,? said Young, ?you?ve probably been a little bit more than shocked that Mitt Romney has been making as many slip-ups as he has in the media spotlight. Not only am I shocked at that, but also his inability to fight back against the media when they jump down his throat [for] misspeaking or saying something inappropriate.?

The Absolute Rights Newsletter is sent to thousands of Absolute Rights email subscribers as part of the never-ending effort to bring relevant and captivating content directly to readers. Newsletters are distributed via email and the articles then appear online at AbsoluteRights.com.

Tim Young, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, joined Absolute Rights in the spring of 2012 and brought his brutally honest opinions with him. He has been consulted as an expert on campaign, social security, health care and labor policies. A professional stand-up comic, Young combines his political and comedic background to add a captivating voice to Absolute Rights? mission of rights protection.

Absolute Rights informs patriotic Americans on their given rights, plus helps protect those rights from government or disaster intrusion. Most importantly, it prides itself on alerting people when their rights are being threatened, creating an active and informed community. For more information, be sure to visit AbsoluteRights.com.

Texas school bars Bible banners at football games

HOUSTON (AP) ? For three straight weeks, high school football players in a small southeast Texas town took the field by bolting through large red-and-white banners that hollered the praises of Jesus Christ.

Most people in Kountze viewed the banners as evidence of the students' admirable moral upbringing ? Christianity and the Bible always had been fundamental to this town of 2,100.

But someone complained to a foundation that fights for the separation of church and state, and by Tuesday, a day after receiving a letter from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, the superintendent banned the banners, and the town became embroiled in a controversy that has touched other communities nationwide.

On Thursday, a judge granted a request by the nonprofit Liberty Institute law firm to temporarily bar the implementation of the ban. It also set a hearing for early October when the sides will be able to make their arguments. The cheerleaders planned to raise their 20-foot banners at Thursday evening's junior varsity football game.

People in the town 90 miles northeast of Houston talk of little else. Parents and students have plastered pictures of the banners ? some of which quote scripture, declaring "I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me" ? on their Facebook pages. A Facebook group created after the ban, Support Kountze Kids Faith, had more than 35,100 members by early Thursday.

Superintendent Kevin Weldon gently explains to every parent who calls that a 2000 U.S. Supreme Court precedent-setting decision requires religion to be kept out of public schools. Some parents support his decision. Others say they will back their children's First Amendment right to hang the banners and are working with the Liberty Institute.

Weldon himself is torn, but he has to abide by the judge's injunction, and will let the attorneys decide whether to fight the institute.

"The decision I made is not my personal opinion," Weldon said. "I'm a Christian. This puts me between a rock and a hard place."

On one side is the Freedom From Religion Foundation, a Madison, Wis.-based nonprofit that challenges any religion in public schools.

"I've never heard of this kind of school problem, this kind of a violation at a public school where students would be expected to run through Bible verses to play football," said the foundation's president, Annie Laurie Gaylor. "It's a new and creative way to work religion into our public schools."

On the other side is the Liberty Institute, a Plano, Texas-based nonprofit law firm that says on its website it is dedicated to "restoring religious liberty across America."

"It's an important and fundamental freedom students have to engage in free speech," said Mike Johnson, senior counsel for the institute. "They are not asking anyone to believe in Christianity or accept the faith. They are just well wishes."

But Tanner Hunt, attorney for the Kountze Independent School District, believes a Supreme Court decision in 2000 that barred prayer at the start of a high school football game sets the precedent.

"This is pretty much a white horse case," Hunt said. "The answer was clear: they must cease and desist."

Epigenetics: Mother's nutrition -- before pregnancy -- may alter function of her children's genes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? Everyone knows that what mom eats when pregnant makes a huge difference in the health of her child. Now, new research in mice suggests that what she ate before pregnancy might be important too. According to a new research report published online in The FASEB Journal, what a group of female mice ate -- before pregnancy -- chemically altered their DNA and these changes were passed to her offspring. These DNA alterations, called "epigenetic" changes, drastically affected the pups' metabolism of many essential fatty acids.

These results could have a profound impact on future research for diabetes, obesity, cancer, and immune disorders.

"As parents, we have to understand better that our responsibilities to our children are not only of a social, economical, or educational nature, but that our own biological status can contribute to the fate of our children, and this effect can be long-lasting," said Mihai Niculescu, M.D., Ph.D., study author from Nutrition Research Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in Chapel Hill, N.C. "My hope is that, along with many other scientists, we will reveal this tight biological relationship between us as parents, and our children, and how we can improve the lives of our children using our own biological machinery."

To make this discovery, Niculescu and colleagues split mouse females into two groups before gestation, and fed them either a control diet, or a diet deficient in alpha-linolenic acid or ALA. This was achieved by replacing the type of fats in the diet, while keeping the number of calories the same. The females were bred with mouse males kept on a control diet. Immediately after the moms delivered the pups, each of these two initial groups were further split in two, so that each half of the initial groups received a flaxseed oil supplemented diet (rich in ALA), while the other halves from each group remained on the same diet.

Researchers used blood and liver to look at polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels and the DNA methylation of a gene called Fads2, which regulates PUFA metabolism. They found that in both the moms and pups, flaxseed oil induced a change in this chemical modification in the Fads2 gene. Flaxseed oil supplementation increased the methylation of this gene, which, in turn, decreased the activation of the gene in pups. However, flaxseed oil was not the only factor with impact upon Fads2 methylation in pups. Results demonstrated that regardless of the flaxseed oil intake, there was a correlation between the methylation of this gene in moms and in their pups, which suggested that pups also inherit this methylation from their moms. The pups' ability to transform PUFAs in their own livers was influenced by both the mother's dietary intake, and also by maternal Fads2 methylation status.

"New York City may be laughed at by some for banning large, sugary sodas and for encouraging a healthy diet," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "This report shows that future generations might not find that funny at all. This report adds to the large body of evidence that an inappropriate diet can produce changes in the function of our DNA and the DNA of our children -- a process called epigenetics. As we begin understand the effects of diet on epigenetics, New York may go from being considered a funny 'nanny-state' to becoming appreciated as a public health visionary."
