A Penigma - a mystery, under a pseudonym

Where, oh where was Republican-Senator-from-Minnesota-Wannabe Dan 'Doc' Severson, explaining how 'friendly' voter ID is to the immigrants meeting this week at the Brooklyn Park City Hall?? The reality is, Voter ID is quite hostile to immigrant voters - LEGAL immigrant voters.? It is not too friendly to legal natural born voters either. ?Could it be he wasn't there, because right wing sources like News Max lead with headlines like Voter ID Prevents Immigration Anarchy?? Immigrants terrify the right.
Ironically, the much vaunted claim that Voter ID laws would PROTECT the 'purity' (racial purity?) of elections from fraud by requiring ID, in states like Indiana did not do so.? Notably the Republican Indiana Secretary of State, Charlie White,?elected in the 2010 election cycle, was convicted in February of this year on six felony counts of voter fraud, theft, and perjury.?White used?his state-approved photo?ID, his driver's license, to vote.?The Wikipedia entry on Charles 'Charlie' P. White noted:
Conviction of voter fraud
On February 4, 2012, a jury found White guilty of six of seven felony charges, including false registration, voting in another precinct, submitting a false ballot, theft, and two counts of perjury. He was acquitted on one fraud charge.[18]
Did Photo ID prevent voter fraud? No. Did Photo ID help detect or prosecute voter fraud? No; voter fraud was discovered because Democrats in Indiana protested the election and registration, along with protections in place prior to Voter ID.? Voter ID did NOTHING to make that election free of fraud.? Voter ID would not?prevent any other?problems with voter fraud?occurring, despite?the political right insisting that Democrats steal elections?through voter fraud - and unsubstantiated, unproven and totally specious claim.?We do not have a problem with voter fraud 'stealing' our elections; not by Democrats, not by illegal?immigrants, not by the elderly, not by former felons legally allowed to vote,?or any other group that would be affected by Voter ID.
What Voter ID does is to make it harder for certain targeted groups to vote or register to vote.? In Texas, an estimated 600,000 (later revised to more than 800,000) minorities, mostly people who were Hispanic, would have been disenfranchised.? Given the reluctance of the legislators passing that legislation to be transparent and open about their legislation, it was arguably their intent to do precisely that.? From the Houston Chronicle, April 11, 2012 (my emphasis added in bold- DG):
AUSTIN - The U.S. Justice Department says there is substantial evidence that Texas' Voter ID law will discriminate against minorities. In court papers filed Wednesday, the department was explaining why Texas lawmakers should turn over their papers and communication regarding the law. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has argued that lawmakers should not have to reveal their internal deliberations.
But the Justice Department says no such privilege exists and that the evidence presented so far shows that 600,000 people will be unable to vote if the law is enforced. The department added that minorities would be impacted the most.
Currently Texas law requires that a voter present a registration card or a photo identification card to vote. The law would require everyone to present an official photo ID card.
I can't come up with a single reason that 'deliberations' about voting should not be public.? If there is ANY topic about which ALL deliberations should be open and public, voting would be at the top of the list, because it is so fundamental, so essential to representative government.
We do not have a problem with illegal immigrants voting in our elections; not in Minnesota, not in the nation.? What we DO have is a problem with LEGAL communities, like Hispanic voters, being denied the vote by right wing efforts to suppress voting.? And we have resistance to any non-European originating participation in the control and operation of this nation on the part of conservatives, as evidenced by white supremacist anti-non-European descended white people?at conservative gatherings such as CPAC over a period of years, and behind legislation such as the anti-marriage equality amendment in North Carolina that just passed.? We have it in conservative movements such as the Full Quiver movement, where the term 'Demographic Winter' is used by the right wing extremists - the same people in many cases promoting Voter ID laws - ?to create fears of white people in the U.S. and Europe losing their majority status:
"Demographic Winter is an argument being advanced by right-wing ?pro-family? activists who claim that low fertility and falling birthrates in Europe auger a massive depopulation crisis that threatens the way of life of the white, Christian West. Particularly, they forecast a ?death of Europe,? wherein hedonistic, atheistic and gay- and abortion-rights-friendly Europeans will bring about their own extinction by failing to have enough children to keep Muslim and Global South immigration at bay. Though there have been drops in fertility in Europe in recent decades, and it is a topic that numerous other organizations and governments and scientists are examining, the labeling of the phenomenon as a ?Demographic Winter? apocalypse by the U.S.-based pro-family movement is a prelude to their offered solution: the revival of large, patriarchal families where the woman is a stay-at-home mother to a full quiver of children, and the father is a benevolent leader of his wife and children. In this way, coalitions like the World Congress of Families have neatly been able to co-opt a population trend, turn it into a crisis, amplify its threat and raise nationalistic support by drawing on centuries-old religious and racial conflicts, and provide the reactionary solution."
This overlaps right wing 'natavism' which seeks to exclude immigrants, and to preserve the U.S. for the existing white majority by excluding immigrants in every way possible from participation.? Nativism is defined by wikipedia, here a handy, very simple explanation, as :
the political position of demanding a favored status for certain established inhabitants of a nation as compared to claims of newcomers or immigrants.[1] Nativism typically means opposition to immigration and efforts to lower the political or legal status of specific ethnic or cultural groups because the groups are considered hostile or alien to the natural culture, and it is assumed that they cannot be assimilated.[2]

The Republican party, and those who are running for office, or who hope to run for office with the party endorsement are NOT friends of recent immigrants, particularly those who are people of color or non-European ethnic minorities.

Hoping to build opposition to the proposal to require Minnesota voters to show an approved photo ID, a group of African leaders in the Twin Cities northwest suburbs held the first in a series of meetings Tuesday night.

The forum, which drew about 50 people, was held at the Brooklyn Park City Hall and organized by the African Immigrant Services, Think Again Minnesota, the League of Women Voters, and TakeAction Minnesota.

"We want to provoke a conversation. We want to start here," said Abdullah Kiatamba, executive director of African Immigrant Services.
He said Tuesday's meeting will be followed soon by another meeting with local Latinos, Asians and other minority groups who could face barriers to voting should the ID proposal pass.
Last month, the Minnesota Legislature voted to approve a constitutional amendment proposal on this fall's ballot that would require voters to show a photo ID, create a new system of "provisional balloting" and end election day "vouching" for voters without proof of residence.
The issue now is headed to voters to decide on Nov. 6 when general elections are held. Republican legislators in favor of requiring voters to show a photo ID have called it a common-sense measure to tighten up Minnesota's voting system and verify voters' identities. DFLers opposing the amendment have argued the requirement would do more harm than good. They say it wouldn't prevent the small amount of election fraud, but it may prevent certain voters from exercising their right to vote.
Kiatamba says the goal is to build a coalition in the northwest suburbs to build momentum between now and November.
Mohammed Dukuly, a Liberian immigrant and an imam at Masjid An-Nur in Minneapolis, said he is concerned about the intentions behind the requirement. "Why was this legislation passed? That's what we should be looking at," he said.
The Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center area is home to a large concentration of immigrants from Liberia, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana and several other African countries.

Someone can urinate on your leg, and try to tell you it's raining, which is what the right is doing in how they characterize Voter ID, but it still is what it is.? From the Think Again Minnesota web site, which clearly connects the red?dots:
Who is behind voting restrictions?

A report by
TakeAction Minnesota, describes how Minnesota?s wealthiest financial institutions and their executives, lobbying groups, and PACs together with the Chamber of Commerce pooled funds and shared resources to enable a Republican takeover of the state legislature in 2010. The Chamber of Commerce, the Minnesota Business Partnership, and Minnesota Forward donated hundred of thousands of dollars to candidates who won seats in the MN House and Senate.

These Senators and Representatives are the ones that passed the referendum for a MN Constitutional Amendment that would prevent hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans from casting a vote. Dan McGrath, executive director of TakeAction Minnesota, called the Amendment to Restrict Voting ?An intentional effort to reduce the voting rolls in order to help corporate conservatives further expand their wealth and power.? 15 of the sponsors of the Amendment to Restrict Voting Rights are members of the American Legislative Exchange Council, an organization of wealthy corporations and legislators that wrote model Voter Restriction legislation introduced in states throughout the nation. Read Brenton Mock's article: "The Wealthy 1% that's behind Minnesota's Voter ID Push."

You don't have to be a genius to connect the dots; the right is anti immigrant.? Voter ID is anti immigrant.? Voter ID is a tactic to put conservatives in power and keep them there, even if it violates the most essential freedom of others, even if it violates the most fundamental, foundational basis of our nation.??It is transformational, but not in a good way.

Next iPhone will have 4-inch screen: report

7 hrs.

Apple plans to use a larger screen on the next-generation iPhone and has begun to place orders for the new displays from suppliers in South Korea and Japan, people familiar with the situation said on Wednesday.?

The new iPhone screens will measure 4 inches from corner to corner, one source said. That would represent a roughly 30 percent increase in viewing area, assuming Apple kept other dimensions proportional. Apple has used a 3.5-inch screen since introducing the iPhone in 2007.

Early production of the new screens has begun at three suppliers: Korea's LG Display Co Ltd, Sharp Corp and Japan Display Inc, a Japanese government-brokered merger combining the screen production of three companies.?

It is likely all three of the screen suppliers will get production orders from Apple, which could begin as soon as June. That would allow the new iPhone to go into production as soon as August, if the company follows its own precedent in moving from orders for prototypes for key components to launch.

Apple's decision to equip the next iPhone with a larger screen represents part of a competitive response to Samsung.

Samsung unveiled its top-of-the line Galaxy smartphone with a 4.8-inch touch-screen and a faster processor earlier this month.

With consumers becoming more and more comfortable using smartphones for tasks they once performed on laptops, like watching video, other smartphone manufacturers have also moved toward bigger displays.

Aesthetics and design?

A likely shakeup in the design of a larger-screen iPhone could go a long way in boosting its "wow" factor, convincing fans to trade in their old iPhones for new ones, said Shaw Wu, an analyst at Sterne Agee.

"Not only do users pay for features, but they also pay for aesthetics and design. That's as important, or more important, than features," Wu said. "People love the current design ? but it's 18 months old."

The latest iPhone 4S was introduced in October of last year and essentially has the same form factor as the iPhone 4, launched in 2010.

Samsung, which this year became the world's largest cellphone maker, sold 45 million smartphones in the first quarter, and sales of the Galaxy phones outstripped the iPhone.

Apple was not immediately available to comment.

Apple's move toward a larger display for the next generation iPhone was earlier reported by the Wall Street Journal.

In addition to being Apple's rival, Samsung is also a major components supplier to the U.S. computer, tablet and phone manufacturer.

The share of the production of new screens that go to each of the three manufacturers working with Apple has not been determined, one source said.

Sales of the touchscreen iPhone now account for about one-half of Apple's total sales, and the phone has been a key source of growth for the company in Asia.

A report in March by a South Korea business newspaper said Apple would use a "retina" display on the next iPhone, the same technology in its latest iPad that enhance image quality.

New Army jobs for women

(AP) FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - Female soldiers this week are moving into new jobs in once all-male units as the Army breaks down formal barriers in recognition of what has already happened in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The policy change announced earlier this year is being tested at nine brigades, including one at Fort Campbell, before going Army-wide. It opens thousands of jobs to female soldiers by loosening restrictions meant to keep them away from the battlefield. Experience on the ground in the past decade showed women were fighting and dying alongside male soldiers anyway.

Col. Val Keaveny Jr., commander of the 4th Brigade Combat Team that is among units piloting the change, told The Associated Press that for the last decade it has been common to have women temporarily attached to the combat units and serve alongside them.

"Women have served in our Army since the Revolutionary War and they have done phenomenal work and continue to do so today," he said. "There is great talent and now we can have it in the headquarters of infantry, armor and cavalry."

Under the new policy, female officers and non-commissioned officers will be assigned to combat units below the brigade level. The change will open up about 14,000 new jobs for women in the military, but there are still more than 250,000 jobs that remain closed to women.

The new jobs within combat battalions are in personnel, intelligence, logistics, signal corps, medical and chaplaincy. The Army is also opening jobs that were once entirely closed to women, such as mechanics for tanks and artillery and rocket launcher crew members.

The 4th Brigade draws its lineage from the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, whose World War II heroics led to books and a TV miniseries called the "Band of Brothers." But these days, Keaveny said there are more than 350 women already serving in the brigade and they will be opening 36 new jobs to women in the battalions.

"For the last 10 years, we have been fighting alongside women. In my experience I have seen that the Band of Brothers quickly integrate their sisters and they are a family," he said.

Capt. Elizabeth Evans, a 44-year-old mother of five, is one of the first women assigned to the combat battalions. She will be serving as a battalion S1, whose job is to oversee personnel issues within the battalion, including awards, casualties, human resources and other administrative responsibilities. She said there is a lot of pride associated with serving in an infantry unit.

"I think there's a rich history in the 101st and especially the 4th Brigade Combat Team," she said. "To me that means something. It means something to be a part of not necessarily history, but to be a part of a once all-male battalion."

Evans, who has deployed to Afghanistan, noted that women have been serving in dangerous jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan for 10 years.

"With the fluidity of the battlefield and how there are no front lines, it just makes more sense to me to allow women to come into those roles, those noncombat staff roles," she said.

Keaveny said these changes will have minimum impact on where women will be located while deployed. Battalion headquarters are generally located at bases where women were already stationed and the Army has been using female engagement teams to reach out to civilians in remote areas.

"Quite honestly we don't see there's going to be any friction," he said.

Kayla Williams, author of "Love My Rifle More Than You: Young and Female in the US Army," served with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team under the 101st Airborne Division during the initial invasion into Iraq as an enlisted soldier in military intelligence.

Early in the war, she wasn't even issued plates for her ballistic vest "because females can't serve in combat," she said. She said once she was temporarily attached to an infantry battalion at Fort Campbell that had no female latrines.

As an Arabic translator, she was attached to infantry units rather than assigned, but doing the same things as her male infantry counterparts, including going on foot patrols and living in remote combat outposts.

"Women have been serving in very forward deployed roles, and women have been serving side-by-side with combat arms personnel, just not in a formalized assigned method," said Williams, who is a fellow at the Truman National Security Project.

She said these incremental changes could improve the professional development of both men and women in the military, but acknowledged that the military still has a long way to go to leveling the field for women.

"It is my personal opinion that the institutionalization of women as not being able to serve in combat arms has a way of subtly allowing sexism within the military," she said.

Evans said she hopes the expanded roles will encourage more women to consider a career in the Army.

"I think for females in general, it's bringing us new avenues for accomplishments, for professional growth. In my personal belief, we are a part of supporting our infantryman," she said.

Egyptian Radio Amateurs Society Youth Activities | Southgate ...

IARU Region 1 Youth Coordinator Lisa Leenders PA2LS reports on amateur radio youth activities in Egypt.

The Egyptian Radio Amateurs Society ERASD, is the officially recognized membership organization for radio amateurs in Egypt.
One of ERASD?s main objectives is to promote and improve amateur radio services and youth activities in Egypt through the participation in international and regional activities. ERASD prepared a plan for three years from 2011 until 2013 to Youth Activities.

The plan divided into four points as Radio Activities, Education, Society's Station, Media, in this subject will talk about the first point Radio Activity. First it's great chance for youth to get useful information about amateur radio. During the radio Activity ERASD providing educational programs and materials to promote amateur radio and develop the scientific and technical skills of the youth.

Last SU8JOTA activity was a great chance to the youth Boys and Girls to participates in the world youth event and see the Radio Amateur communications Technology in this context, ERASD is currently focused on simplifying science and technology to youth in general, and more particularly in areas related to emergency and Natural Disasters ERASD and the Cairo International Scout Center came together to organize the participation of junior Scouts in this international Scouting event.

The theme of the 54th Jamboree On The Air was: Peace, Environment and Natural Disasters. It was a great chance for youth to learn about the use of modern means of communications to help in saving lives, and to know how each and every Scout can prepare to intervene to save people in their communities during great natural or climatic disasters. Scouts have shown that they know how to quickly and efficiently react. Scouts are often of great help for rescuers working on the ground, thanks to their self-sacrifice and determination; they are often on the front line during disasters that affect their immediate environment.

Simulated Emergency Test Why are Radio Amateurs and Scouts always there first when disaster strikes? During the JOTA weekend we organized a small-scale emergency test. It was a challenging activity in which an Earthquake emergency was simulated and Scouts responded using radio communications, techniques, materials and skills that they learned during this JOTA, such as how to install an amateur radio station and antennas.

Should we build a real-life Starship Enterprise and fly it to Mars?

One engineer thinks so. His incredibly detailed plan for a functioning version of the iconic spaceship includes a rotating saucer to simulate Earth's gravity.?

By Nancy Atkinson,?Staff / May 14, 2012

In Star Trek lore, the first Starship Enterprise will be built by the year 2245. But today, an engineer has proposed ? and outlined in meticulous detail ? building a full-sized, ion-powered version of the Enterprise complete with 1G of gravity on board, and says it could be done with current technology, within 20 years. ?We have the technological reach to build the first generation of the spaceship known as the USS Enterprise ? so let?s do it,? writes the curator of the?Build The Enterprise website, who goes by the name of BTE Dan.

This ?Gen1? Enterprise could get to Mars in ninety days, to the Moon in three, and ?could hop from planet to planet dropping off robotic probes of all sorts en masse ? rovers, special-built planes, and satellites.?
?
Complete with conceptual designs, ship specs, a funding schedule, and almost every other imaginable detail, the?BTE website?was launched just this week and covers almost every aspect of how the project could be done. This Enterprise would be built entirely in space, have a rotating gravity section inside of the saucer, and be similar in size with the same look as the USS Enterprise that we know from Star Trek.

?It ends up that this ship configuration is quite functional,? writes BTE Dan, even though his design moves a few parts around for better performance with today?s technology. This version of the Enterprise would be three things in one: a spaceship, a space station, and a spaceport. A thousand people can be on board at once ? either as crew members or as adventurous visitors.

While the ship will not travel at warp speed, with an ion propulsion engine powered by a 1.5GW nuclear reactor, it can travel at a constant acceleration so that the ship can easily get to key points of interest in our solar system. Three additional nuclear reactors would create all of the electricity needed for operation of the ship.

The saucer section would be a .3 mile (536 meter) diameter rotating, magnetically-suspended gravity wheel that would create 1G of gravity.

The first assignments for the Enterprise would have the ship serving as a space station and space port, but then go on to missions to the Moon, Mars, Venus, various asteroids and even Europa, where the ships? laser would be used not for combat but for cutting through the moon?s icy crust to enable a probe to descend to the ocean below.

Octomom to Tanning Mom: You Suck!

Octomom just heard about the New Jersey woman giving her a run for Mother of the Year, Patricia Krentcil, and boy oh boy, is she incredulous!

Nadya Suleman admits that while she is always inclined to give parents the benefit of the doubt ... the now-infamous Tanning Mom needs help.

If not mental help, then some serious parenting classes.

Octomom SulemanTanning Mom Pic

From one amazing parent to another ...

Octomom says she doesn't feel Patricia Krentcil should lose her kid, even though she was recently arrested for taking her little girl tanning.

She does feel, however, that Child Protective Services should step in to give Krentcil some tips on child-rearing. Hard to argue with that.

It's kind of like the pot calling the kettle bronze here. No, Octo hasn't been arrested at any point, but she's messing up 13 more kids than Patty.

In any case, when a woman who's been visited by CPS herself, filed for bankruptcy and started an adult film career (Octomom's porn video debut is slated for later this year) decides to call you out on your mothering skills ... never a good sign.
